Cerussite is a mineral composed of lead carbonate belonging to the aragonite group. The formation of Cerussite typically occurs in the oxidation zone of lead deposits. It forms as a secondary mineral through the alteration of galena, the primary lead sulfide mineral. During this process, galena reacts with carbonate-rich waters near the Earth's surface. This reaction leads to the substitution of sulfur in galena with carbonate, resulting in the creation of Cerussite. The presence of other elements during formation can influence its color, with impurities that can lead to shades of gray or even blue.
