Vol. 3, May 1877: pp. 343 – 524. – “On the Vapor-Densities of Peroxide of Nitrogen, Formic Acid, Acetic Acid, and Perchloride of Phosphorus”. Offprint from: American Journal of Science and Arts . Vol. 18, 1879: pp. 277–387. Sammelband of rare papers by Gibbs; with ALS from chemist Wolcott Gibbs to New York legislator Samuel B. Ruggles concerning Ogden Rood, the decimal system and his new life at Harvard. Josiah Gibbs, a professor at Yale, began his study of quarternions after reading James Clerk Maxwell’s Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism . He concluded, though, that they did not provide an appropriate language for mathematical physics, so he worked out a more straightforward vector analysis. This pamphlet on the subject was printed for private distribution to the students in his classes and to select correspondents. Gibbs’ version of the vector analysis was not formally published until 1901, when one of his students, Edwin B. Wilson, prepared a textbook based on Gibbs's lectures. The present copy is inscribed to one such subscriber, “from the Author”. Present also are: the first and second appearances of Gibbs’ foundational work on chemical thermodynamics, “On the Equilibrium of Heterogenous Substances”; and the rare “On the Vapor-Densities […]”, only one other copy of which has appeared at auction. Five papers in one volume, octavo (230 × 145mm). Front wrappers of Elements of Vector Analysis , Part 2 offprint of “On the Equilibrium of Homogenous Substances” and “On the Vapor-Densities […]” bound in, the first inscribed “from the Author”. Contemporary buckram, gilt lettering on spine (rubbed, hinges cracked, upper joint starting). Provenance : Harrison D. Horblit (bookplate; his sale, Christie’s East, New York, 16 February 1994, lot 28. [ With: ] Wolcott GIBBS (no relation). Autograph letter signed to Samuel B.
