Rarity of the Indian Ocean: Conus zonatus (62 mm) from...

Scientific name: Conus zonatus Hwass in Bruguière, 1792 (or shortly: Conus zonatus Hwass, 1792). Author: First described by the Danish conchologist Christhard Henrik Hwass in 1792. His descriptions were published in the famous encyclopedic work of Jean-Guillaume Bruguière. German name: Gürtel-Kegelschnecke or Zonen-Kegel. Family: Conidae (cone snails). Origin: Maldives (central Indian Ocean). The species is regionally limited and occurs mainly on the island chains from the Seychelles across the Maldives to Thailand and Bali. Size comparison: At 62 mm (6.2 cm) the shell is a true large specimen. Although the species can reach up to 85 mm, most found pieces average between 45 and 55 mm. A piece over 6 cm is already regarded as a noteworthy cabinet-sized specimen among collectors. Habitat: It lives in shallow tidal zones, lagoons, and on coral reefs, usually hidden in sand or under coral blocks at depths of 2 to 20 meters. The living animal hunts predatorily and feeds mainly on marine worms (polychaetes). Shipped via DHL insured Sale only within the EU SKU Oberdiek Conus zonatus
