Approximately 80 pp., including about 40 plates reproduced in full color, accompanied by commentary. French edition, translated from English by Michel Braudeau. ISBN 2-85108-145-4. A work by the British specialist in Indian art, Philip Rawson, devoted to the role of eroticism in the arts of India. The iconography includes, in particular, Mughal and Rajput miniatures, Indian paintings, and depictions inspired by love literature, placing the images within their aesthetic, religious, and symbolic contexts. The book is particularly appealing for its extensive series of full-page color reproductions, each accompanied by a commentary. A description from a specialized bookstore specifically identifies the 1977 edition as a large quarto (in-4) containing 40 color plates with accompanying commentary. Condition: shows signs of use. The cover is intact but soiled, yellowed, and stained, with scuffing, creases, and wear on the corners and headbands. Handwritten inscription “65” on the title page. The interior appears complete and generally in satisfactory condition, with a few marks and signs of wear.
