A silver-gelatin print made in 2013 from the negative on baryta paper and mounted onto an aluminium plate. On four labels on the reverse: signed in pencil, titled and numbered, with copyright stamps. Dimensions: 41.7 x 43.7 in (Large format) Large print produced in 2013 for the ‘Flashback’ exhibition on Raymond Cauchetier at the Salon de la Photo, Paris-Expo Porte de Versailles, Paris, 7–11 November 2013. Raymond Cauchetier’s account: 24 August 1959 – 10.00 am – Champs-Élysées. “Only experts know that this photograph, which over time has become the symbol of the film, and indeed of the New Wave, is not a still from the set. The film sequence depicting the meeting between Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo had just been shot at the top of the Champs-Élysées, amidst the crowd, by the cameraman hidden in a Post Office pushchair. But there were so many onlookers that I decided to take the actors right to the bottom of the avenue, to a spot that was still deserted, to recreate the scene and capture it in a single image. My experience with photo-novels came in handy, as it allowed me to earn a living between film projects. I could never have imagined that this improvised direction of the actors would go on to have such an exceptional impact."
