Printer: Thomas Consani, then at the Central Dupon Image laboratory (now a printer at the Picto laboratory). Monday 24 August 1959. 10.00 am – Champs-Élysées. A heated discussion between Godard and Jean Seberg about the script, in the presence of Belmondo, in a café on the Champs-Élysées. For Jean Seberg, it was the first day of filming. In a café on the Champs-Élysées, near the Rond-Point, she finds herself face to face with Jean-Luc Godard, who shows her a small notebook in which he has jotted down some ideas, but without a single line of dialogue. “What am I supposed to say, what am I supposed to do?” she panics. “I’ll tell you during filming,” replies Jean-Luc, which does nothing to reassure her. Belmondo, the philosopher, exudes the calm of a seasoned professional. He has already shot the scenes for the film’s first week. He is now used to Godard’s methods. Nothing will surprise him from now on. Indeed, the entire film will unfold through complete improvisation. But *Breathless* will become one of the cult films of our time, and will bring Jean Seberg a fame far greater than that of any of her American films. Another quote from Jean Seberg on Jean-Luc Godard’s way of working: ‘With *A Bout de Souffle*, obviously there was no script; there was a sort of three-page typewritten synopsis, and then, day by day, it was partly improvised and partly Godard would turn up in the morning with his pockets full of scraps of paper on which he’d jotted down a few lines during the night.” Jean Seberg – Grand écran, 1965, Interview about the filming of *À bout de souffle* — INA
