A silver gelatin print, produced in 1998, signed in felt-tip pen, with ‘Copyright’ and title stamps on the reverse. Dimensions: 9.4 x 6.7 in Raymond Cauchetier recounts: “Belmondo and Seberg on the Champs-Élysées… only those in the know realise that this photograph, which has over time become the emblem of the film – and indeed of the New Wave – is not merely a still from the set. The scene in the film depicting the meeting between Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo had just been shot at the top of the Champs-Élysées, amidst the crowd, by the cameraman hidden inside a Post Office pushchair. But there were so many onlookers that I decided to take the actors right down to the bottom of the avenue, to a spot that was still deserted, to re-enact the scene and capture it in a single image. My experience with photo-novels came in handy, as it allowed me to earn a living between film projects. And that is how I spontaneously staged this photograph, the fate of which exceeded anything I could ever have imagined.”
