His position was forward, developing the majority of his career at Real Madrid Club de Fútbol of Spain’s Primera División, while he went on to accumulate 22 titles among the various teams he was part of. Considered one of the greatest Spanish footballers of all time, he became the top scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League, the all-time top scorer for Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, and for the Spanish national team. After completing his coaching course, he joined Real Madrid’s youth categories where he began his work as a coach. Since 2019 he has been the head coach of his reserve team, Real Madrid Castilla, in Group 2 of the Primera División RFEF. During his active career he remained tied to the Madrid club for sixteen years, specifically from 1994 to 2010, then with the German club Schalke 04 from 2010 to 2012, and with Qatari Al-Sadd from 2012 to 2014 before ending his playing career with New York Cosmos in 2015. Thanks to his long and successful career, he is regarded as one of the most important footballers in the history of Real Madrid and of La Liga. His scoring records, number of matches played and titles won have made him a living legend of the Madrid club in particular and European football in general. He is considered by the Spanish Center for History and Statistics of Football (CIHEFE) the best player in the history of La Liga. He holds the record for most appearances in Real Madrid’s history overall with 741 matches, ahead of Iker Casillas, who played 725 matches, and Manuel Sanchís, who played a total of 708 matches. He is also the player with the most matches in Real Madrid’s history in La Liga with 550 appearances, the outfield player with the most matches in the club’s history in Europe with 135 appearances (second overall after Iker Casillas), and the youngest player in the club’s history to reach 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 official matches with the club. On the other hand, he is the third all-time top scorer in the club with 323 goals, only surpassed by Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema and ahead of madridista icon Alfredo Di Stéfano, who scored 307 goals. He was, up to the 2015-16 season, Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer in La Liga with 228 goals, a record that was surpassed by Cristiano Ronaldo.
