Relic of St. Thomas, Cloth, with a wax seal and silk threads, as in the photo Thomas, called Didymus (or Didymus Judas Thomas; fl. 1st century AD), was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. He is best known for being the protagonist of an event in Jesus' life, attested only by the Gospel of John (20:24-29[3]), in which he first doubted Jesus' resurrection and then recognized him. According to Christian tradition, he ventured to preach the Gospel beyond the boundaries of the Roman Empire, in Persia and in India, where he founded the first Christian community. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic, Orthodox, and Coptic churches; his relics are located in the Basilica of Saint Thomas the Apostle in Ortona. The Gospel of Thomas contains an attestation that declares its composition by Thomas. The reliquary does not contain human remains. This object is offered exclusively for its historical, cultural, or decorative value. No religious significance is claimed, implied, or supported. Over time, some elements of the reliquary may have been altered or restored.
