RÉMY (Yves and Ada). Les Soldats de l'Image. Ivry-sur-Seine, Ministry of Defense, Armed Forces Film and Photography Agency (ECPA), 1998. Large oblong quarto (approx. 25 × 31 cm), 111 pp., publisher’s black cloth binding with an illustrated photographic dust jacket. Screenplay and texts by Yves and Ada Rémy. Numerous black-and-white and color photographs from the Armed Forces’ photographic archives. ISBN 2-11-091163-8. The BnF confirms this 1998 edition, printed in Rennes by Oberthur. An important work devoted to French military correspondents and war photography in the 20th century. Drawing on the ECPA’s collections, it traces the soldier and the military photographer from World War I through to contemporary operations, prioritizing a human and visual approach to war over an exhaustive chronology. The photographs depict not only the photographers themselves but also soldiers on the front lines, combat, troop movements, equipment, and scenes of military life. The collection also serves as a record of the history of the armed forces’ photographic service, whose institutional origins date back to 1915. The copy presented here is indeed the original 1998 edition, not the 2007 multimedia reissue accompanied by a DVD, which is also cataloged by the BnF. Condition: good copy. Interior is clean and well-preserved. Dust jacket is quite worn, with scuffing, signs of wear, small tears, and, most notably, a fairly noticeable tear/missing section at the top of the back cover, visible in the photographs. These flaws should be noted and reduce the value.
