René Mels (1909-1977) – Composition – 1975 – Watercolor and ink – Signed and dated René Mels (1909-1977) Composition Watercolor and ink on paper, 1975 Signature Signed "R. Mels" at the bottom right. Date in pencil, under the signature: "75". Verso blank, except for a small ink blot. Dimensions 43 × 30.5 cm Sold unframed Condition Beautiful sheet, light tones preserved. Paper slightly yellowed with time, a few handling creases, a horizontal crease at the bottom. Small ink blot on the verso. No major losses visible. The recto remains clean and bright. See photos. Description Watercolor and ink from 1975, untitled. In the center, a blue oval, surrounded by black hatchings. To the right, a pink mass; to the left, blue and green washes. The stroke is short everywhere: spirals, hatchings, arcs that close the composition without filling it. The white of the paper remains ample at the top and bottom. The gesture is more graphic than in the pure washes of the same year: the ink holds the drawing, the watercolor lays down the color. This is a sheet from the final period, signed and dated, two years before Mels's death. Horizontal format. Color is noted by masses, the line on top. Biography René Mels (René Meulemans, 1909-1977) trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts of Leuven and Brussels, then at La Cambre. After an early Expressionist phase influenced by Permeke, he moved toward abstraction from 1947. Active member of Jeune Peinture Belge (exhibitions 1947-1948 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels), he joined the group Art abstrait in 1952 and co-founded Cap d’encre in 1963. His work is characterized by a concern with construction, a flexible handwriting, and expressive chromaticism. In 1950, a state grant allowed him to work at Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris. His watercolors, engravings, pastels, and paintings are included in numerous public Belgian and international collections, notably the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
