English Translation (Auction Description) France / Pioneers of Early Aviation – René Vidart (1890–1928): Extremely Rare Lot Consisting of a Hand-Signed and Dedicated Photo Postcard ("Aérodrome de la Champagne", Déperdussin Monoplane, Reims with Personal Dedication to "Regard") and a Contemporary Studio Portrait Card ("L'Aviateur René Vidart", Photographie Gauthier, Oyonnax) Description of the Object: A wonderful and historically highly significant ensemble from the golden age of early French aviation pioneers, consisting of two historical picture postcards: 1. The Autograph and Motif Card (Reims): A contemporary photo postcard of the Aérodrome de la Champagne (Cliché Loth, Reims) showing the famous chief pilot René Vidart in flight on a Déperdussin monoplane, complemented by a portrait medallion. The card is completely handwritten, personally dedicated, and signed by René Vidart: „À mon brave Regard – Souvenir amical d'un [...] oiseau Divonnait – R. Vidart“ (A wonderfully fluid cursive handwriting featuring a personal dedication to a companion named Regard and the charming addition referring to himself as a "bird from Divonne"). 2. The Studio Portrait Card (Oyonnax): An exquisite photo card from the Gauthier studio in Oyonnax entitled "L'Aviateur René Vidart". It depicts the young, elegant aviator wearing a tweed jacket, necktie, balloon cap, and aviation badge—an iconic portrait of early 20th-century aviation idols. Exact Transcription & Reading of the Autograph: Front side of the aviation card (handwritten by René Vidart): „À mon brave Regard Souvenir amical d'un [...] oiseau Divonnait R. Vidart“ Biographical Tribute & Historical Context of René Vidart (1890–1928): 1. Background, Youth, and Entry into Aviation: René Vidart was born on July 24, 1890, in Divonne-les-Bains, the grandson of the founder of the famous local thermal spa (Dr. Paul Vidart). As a wealthy young man, he initially devoted himself to extreme sports (skiing, bobsledding, automobile and motorcycle racing) before falling under the spell of the mechanized skies emerging at the turn of the century. • In June 1910, he completed his first flight on a Henriot aircraft in Reims. • On June 21, 1910, he earned his pilot's license (Brevet No. 133). • In December of the same year, he set a passenger speed record in a Déperdussin monoplane (100 km in 1 hour and 32 seconds). 2. European Ace and Pre-War Triumphs: Vidart rapidly rose to become one of pre-war Europe's celebrated aviation aces. He participated in major international air shows and long-distance races (including the 1911 European Circuit, where he secured stage victories on the Paris–Liège and Calais–Paris routes). He undertook spectacular cross-country flights, gained fame as a flight instructor, founded his own flight school in Ambérieu-en-Bugey, and served as director of the Lyon Aviation Company. 3. World War I and Tragic End: With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, he volunteered for military service. Initially deployed as a driver, he soon transitioned to the front lines as a military pilot, flying reconnaissance and combat missions (including on Nieuport aircraft). In February 1915, he suffered a severe arm injury in a serious flying accident that permanently grounded him. Nevertheless, he continued to serve as head of the military flight school in Pau. For his service, he was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. His life ended tragically: on November 2, 1928, René Vidart died at the age of 38 in an accident on his estate in Le Bourget-du-Lac, leaving behind the enduring legacy of one of French aviation's most elegant and daring pioneers. Condition & Preservation: Both postcards are in very fine and collectible condition appropriate for their age. The autograph card features strong, high-contrast ink and light, period-typical edge wear; the portrait card is also exceptionally well-preserved. A fantastic, museum-grade ensemble for discerning collectors of early flight autographs and aviation history. 2. C304 Look to the pictures. We guarantee the origin and date!
