There I carried out several solo and group exhibitions, and some of my works have reached private collections not only in Cuba but also in different countries around the world such as Portugal, the United States, France, Spain, Mexico and Brazil. Since 2006 I have resided in Madrid (Spain) where I have continued studying Fine Arts at different academies such as the C10 Academy and the prestigious “Madrid Academy of Art.” This has solidified my training as an artist who navigates different pictorial styles and who can focus on figurative, realistic, and concrete art or surrealist art with total flight of imagination. The Cigar Smoker As a Cuban painter based in Madrid since 2006, there are essences of my homeland that I carry marked in my soul and that I need to express to keep my origin alive. This work, created in 2023, is an intimate and resounding homage to the women of my Cuba, to their strength, their mystique, and their cultural heritage. By portraying this woman, I am not seeking mere genre painting; I depict a faithful devotee of Oshún (or Ochún), the powerful Orisha of the Yoruba religion who rules over sweet waters, rivers, fertility, love, and seduction. In Cuban Santería, this deity is syncretized with the Virgin of Charity of Cobre (Patroness of Cuba). It is not a random portrait; I pursue capturing the dignity of the model, the depth of her gaze, and the spiritual, sensual, and mysterious atmosphere that surrounds the ritual of the smoke, reflecting the aché (spiritual power) of the goddess to whom she pays tribute. It is a piece of my Caribbean identity dialoguing directly with the viewer. True to my language, I have worked this piece in oil on canvas, leveraging the medium's nobility to sculpt the features, the magnetism of the gaze, the glow of the skin, and the folds of the turban. The brushwork on the face is delicate and precise, seeking a contemporary realism that dignifies the model's expression. In contrast, the background and the cigarette smoke show a much freer, looser, and material handling, where a spatula or loaded brush creates a vibrant texture that adds dynamism and an almost ethereal and ritual quality to the scene. To envelop this portrait in a magical aura, I decided to use an atmosphere dominated by pinks, purples, and magentas in the background, which wrap the figure like an echo of nostalgia. The main light and contrast come from the warm yellow of the turban, the sacred and iconic color of Oshún, symbolizing wealth, gold, sweetness, and self-love. The skin is rendered with a rich range of earth tones and ochres, faithfully reflecting the warmth of the complexion. Finally, a subtle but strategic touch of turquoise blue on the necklace jewel stands out, a cool chromatic accent that balances the overall warmth and magnetically draws the gaze to the center of the composition.
