Riccio di mare - 1604

Riccio di mare - 1604

Woodcut depiction dedicated to the sea urchin, defined as a "notissimo pesce" (very well-known fish). The drawing was made by Giorgio Liberale da Udine and the wood engraving carved by Wolfang Meyerpeck for the 1604 edition of the famous herbarium by Pietro Andrea Mattioli entitled "De i discorsi di m. Pietro Andrea Matthioli sanese, medico cesareo", a work on which generations of apothecaries, botanists and physicians have formed, in which part of the second book is devoted to some animals. The sea urchin is illustrated and described not with a zoological or culinary aim, but medical, i.e., highlighting which diseases and ailments it can cure depending on how its shell is eaten or worked. The sheet has a beautiful and homogeneous coloring of rather old workmanship and shows excellent preservation, with only a hint of water stain in part of the right margin. Accurate and prompt shipping.
