Richard Rother (1890–1980) - In memory

Richard Rother (1890, Bieber – 1980, Fröhstockheim). "Dem Gedenken des Malers, Graphikers u. Keramikers Wilhelm Sauer, Wien, gestorben am 10. Dezember 1930" [In memory of the painter, graphic artist, and ceramist Wilhelm Sauer, of Vienna, who passed away on December 10, 1930]. Woodcut, hand-signed by the German artist, 1931. Size: 24 x 10 cm. In a glass frame, mounted on red velvet. Size: 30 x 21 cm. This woodcut is dedicated to the memory of the artist Wilhelm Sauer (1892–1930), who died in 1930 at a very young age. The portion of the text referring to a commemorative exhibition has been folded back (the text reads: "On September 30, 1931, at 11:00 a.m., a collective memorial exhibition of works by the painter, graphic artist, and ceramist Wilhelm Sauer, of Vienna, will open at the Vienna Secession"). In a distinctly Expressionist style, Rother draws upon the medieval iconography of the *Danse Macabre* (*Totentanz*): a skeleton saws through the base of a lush, fruit-laden tree—adorned with birds, representing Wilhelm Sauer’s artistic and life achievements—symbolizing how death abruptly brings creative output to an end...
