The correspondence between King Ludwig II of Bavaria and Richard Wagner is regarded as one of the most fascinating and historically significant documents in music and cultural history. It documents an extraordinary relationship characterized by ardent artistic devotion, emotional dependence, and political controversy. The correspondence began immediately on May 3, 1864 — one day after the freshly crowned, only 18-year-old monarch had brought the heavily indebted composer to Munich — and ended only shortly before Wagner's death in January 1883. With letters and documents presented as facsimiles and fold-out plates.
