R.F. Mosley – Set of 6 antique sterling silver knives with richly decorated pommels – Sheffield – 1906 – original case Magnificent and particularly decorative English six-piece set of antique knives, made by R.F. Mosley (Robert Fead Mosley) from Sheffield, a renowned English manufacturer of fine tableware and silverware. The knives are fitted with handsome sterling silver pommels, richly detailed with a floral relief. Through the relief run graceful branches with leaves and flowers, while the ends are finished with a pronounced fan/shell motif. Combining the relief, the organic shapes and the polished silver gives the knives a particularly elegant appearance. The pommels are filled. On the pommels are several English assay marks visible. The maker's mark consists of the individual letters R – F – M, belonging to Robert Fead Mosley / R.F. Mosley of Sheffield. In addition, the traditional English silver marks are present, including the lion passant, indicating the silver content as sterling silver (925/1000), and the Sheffield hallmark. R.F. Mosley was a well-known Sheffield manufacturer of, among other things, cutlery and knives. The company was active in a period when Sheffield enjoyed an international reputation for high-quality English cutlery and silverware. The silver pommels are paired with metal/steel blades, as was common with this type of antique cutlery. The blades have an elegant rounded shape. A particularly attractive feature of this set is the matching antique presentation box. The exterior is finished in deep red/bordeaux with a fine gold-colored framing. Inside, the six knives lie side by side in a dark burgundy velvet lining. The bottom of the box is lined with red satin. This makes the set present itself very beautifully when the box is opened. The set is in antique, used condition and has a lovely appearance suitable for its age. On the silver pommels there are signs of use and fine scratches. The steel blades also show age and use marks, including scratches, discoloration and local oxidation. The case also shows signs of wear and age on both the interior and exterior. Please refer carefully to all photos; these form an important part of the description. The decoration of the silver pommels remains beautifully visible despite the age, and the hallmarks are present and recognizable on several pieces. A charming and decorative complete set of English sterling silver, attractive to collectors of antique English silver, Sheffield silver, historic tableware and classical dining-room accessories.
