Roberto (XX-XXI) - Zonnig straatgezicht met historische huizen en figuren

Sunny street scene with historic houses and figures. Artist or maker's name: The painting is signed in the bottom right; the signature appears to read ‘Roberto’. Title unknown. Sunny street scene with historic houses and figures. Materials and techniques: Oil on panel, with visible brushstrokes and locally a slightly embossed paint layer. On the backside a wooden panel is visible. Framing: With a frame. The painting is housed in a broad gold-colored ornamental frame with profiled edges, embossed decorations and decorative corner ornaments. Discussion and analysis of the work: The painting shows a scenic street with old brick houses, Jacobethan gables, red tiled roofs and wooden shutters. Several figures enliven the scene. In the foreground a woman walks with a basket, while other people stand by the houses or walk further down the street. The street guides the eye toward the light background and gives the composition depth. The shadowy buildings on the left contrast with the sunny facade on the right. Warm reddish-brown and ochre-yellow tones alternate with green treescapes and a soft blue, cloudy sky. The subject has a romantic, figurative character. The weathered masonry, architectural details and the alternation between sunlight and shadow are carefully worked out. The façades evoke the Netherlands.
