RODRIGUEZ, HILARIO (1936-1987) "Fliegender Korb mit Ají-Chilis vor

Öl auf Platte. Unten links schwarz signiert und datiert: Hilario Rodriguez 84. Maße: 81/103 cm. In vergoldeter Profilrahmung. 100/119 cm. | Hilario Rodríguez — “Flying Basket with Ají Chilies Against a Cloud Background” (1984) Oil on panel. Signed and dated in black lower left: Hilario Rodriguez 84. Dimensions: 81 × 103 cm. In a gilt profile frame: 100 × 119 cm. The Dominican painter Hilario Rodríguez, trained in his hometown of Santiago de los Caballeros under Félix Negro Disla and later at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo under renowned mentors such as Hernández Ortega, Yoryi Morel, and José Gausachs, is regarded as a versatile master of Dominican modernism. Alongside figurative genre scenes and landscapes, his later work is distinguished by creations poised delicately between reality and fantasy. In the present work from 1984, Rodríguez breaks strikingly with the classical conventions of the still life. The central motif of the composition is a woven basket floating weightlessly in a vast, deep-blue sky amid white cumulus clouds. From it spills a multitude of vivid green and occasional red ají chilies—an element deeply symbolic within Caribbean culture and folklore. One solitary chili pod has detached itself from the group and drifts in isolation through the right side of the composition. Through the surreal motif of levitation and the deliberate distortion of scale, Rodríguez removes the objects from their ordinary context. He transforms an everyday cultural emblem of his homeland into a timeless and poetic visual enigma. Stylistically, this dreamlike estrangement recalls the œuvre of European Surrealism, while the luminous palette preserves an unmistakably Caribbean identity. This is a characteristic and mature work by the artist, created only three years before his early death in October 1987. The painting remains in vibrant, age-appropriate excellent original condition. SHIPPING TO THE USA MUST BE ARRANGED BY THE BUYER.
