Romain Rolland - Lettre autographe signée à Victor Margueritte - 1923

Autograph letter signed by Romain Rolland, French writer and Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915, dated Monday, February 19, 1923. Written in black ink on a double sheet of gray vellum paper. In this letter addressed to Victor Margueritte, Romain Rolland thanks him for his literary critique of his latest work and offers him vibrant support following the scandal of "La Garçonne" and its removal from the Legion of Honor, denouncing with force the hypocrisy of society and censorship. “Monday, February 19, 1923 Dear Victor Margueritte Forgive me for only thanking you today for your so friendly article on Annette and Sylvie. Being away from Paris and absorbed in work, I read it late. I recognized therein the kindness you showed me from my beginnings in the novel. I am all the more sensitive to it as it has been rare from my great elders. I count them and I do not forget them: You, Verhaeren, J. H. Rosny. I do not speak to you of the vileness that was done to you. Tartuffe rules. Tartuffe defends morality, as he defends the homeland. Tartuffe has, for ten years, found a way to satisfy his bloody resentments. Tartuffe can do anything; but Tartuffe cannot prevent me from despising Tartuffe. Please believe, dear Victor Margueritte, in my affectionate gratitude Villeneuve (Vaud) Villa Olga” Dimensions: 13.4 x 20.9 cm Condition: Good overall condition, presence of two filing perforations in the margin and creases inherent to mailing.
