All auctions / Asian Art / Roman Carnelian Ring | Eagle of Jupiter Intaglio Seal

Roman, Imperial period. A ring cut in its entirety from a single piece of carnelian, hoop and bezel alike! The stone glows a warm semi-opaque orange, the band swelling gently at the shoulders toward a flattened oval face into which a bird, most likely an eagle with partly spread wings, has been engraved in intaglio. Such all-stone rings are rarer survivals than the familiar gem-in-metal type, demanding that the lapidary drill and shape the hoop without fracturing it. The sunken device would have printed in relief when pressed into wax or clay, serving as a personal seal; the eagle, bird of Jupiter and standard of the legions, carried connotations of authority and divine favor.
