All auctions / Asian Art / Roman Empire Green Glass Flask with Pinched Nodules

Roman, Imperial period, likely Judea region. A free-blown flask of pale green, nearly translucent glass. Its pear-shaped body rises to a short cylindrical neck finished with a thickened, fire-rounded rim. Small knobs, pinched up from the hot wall, are set in loose rows around the swelling body. They are both decoration and something practical: the raised nubs may have helped the user keep hold of a slick vessel full of oil or perfume, which is the likely use of so modest a flask. Centuries of burial have left the surface with patches of milky white weathering, rainbow iridescence, and traces of earth. Item # 205185
