Roman Green Glass Unguentarium - Piriform Bottle with Flared Rim

Roman, Imperial period. An ancient Roman glass cosmetic bottle in pale green, free blown with a piriform body rising to a constricted neck, a flaring cupped mouth, and an outsplayed folded rim, the base rounded. The glass holds scattered air bubbles and swirled impurities from manufacture, with patches of light earthen encrustation from burial. Small bottles of this kind held perfumed oils, unguents, and cosmetics throughout the Roman world, circa first to third century CE, and were produced in quantity following the spread of glassblowing in the first century.
