Ca. AD 180 - 220 or later. A marble sarcophagus relief depicting a mounted Amazon in combat, with her rearing horse trampling a fallen figure beneath its forelegs. The horse is carved in high relief, with an elongated head, flowing mane, muscular neck and raised forequarters, its hind legs extended in a vigorous stride. The Amazon wears a short tunic with deeply carved folds gathered at the waist, and a billowing mantle extending behind her. Beneath the horse, a fallen warrior is depicted with a muscular torso and bent limbs, partially obscured by a curved shield. The scene is framed by a projecting upper moulding and a narrow lower border. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 1951,0306.1.
