ROMAN STONE CAMEO OF YOUNG DIONYSUS IN GOLD RING

Ca. AD 1 - 300. A dark stone cameo carved with the youthful head of Dionysus, with softly modelled features and flowing hair. Mounted in a possibly later gold ring, the circular cameo is enclosed by a raised bezel bordered with applied granules. The broad flat-section hoop is decorated with a continuous band of applied wire scrolls between plain raised borders. Size: D:18.34mm / US: 8 1/4 / UK: Q; Weight: 7.5g Provenance: Private London collection of an art professional; acquired on the UK and European art markets between 1980s to early 2000s.
