This brooch is not only a decorative and precious piece of jewellery made of gold, a beautiful diamond, and delicate seed pearls—but during the Victorian era, it also signaled to everyone that its wearer had recently entered into the bond of marriage. The brooch’s design is meant to be interpreted as a word puzzle. The moon appears as a narrow, curved crescent; the flowers, however, represent honey, for their scent and nectar are just as sweet. Together, they thus spell out the word “honeymoon,” the term commonly used in the English-speaking world for the honeymoon. Brooches of this kind were very popular in the late Victorian era and were typically given to young brides by their husbands as a wedding gift. The brooch is made of gold and was crafted in Great Britain at the transition from the Victorian to the Edwardian era. It is in excellent condition and remains a romantic gift even today—a hidden message between two lovers whose meaning becomes apparent to outsiders only at second glance.
