marble, incised with the artist's signature and numbered 'R. Arad 3/12' verso, 29cm diameter (irregular), A private collection, London. Ron Arad’s work is defined by his willingness to treat materials as a starting point for design, rather than as a means of construction. Across his furniture, interiors, sculptures and buildings, Arad frequently questions the conventional distinction between practical object and work of art, creating pieces in which utility, experimentation and visual impact are closely intertwined. Steel, aluminium and polyamide have featured prominently throughout his career, transformed into objects with pronounced curves and sculptural qualities, through processes of mechanical manipulation. Born in Tel Aviv in 1951, Arad studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art. He later moved to London to continue his education at the Architectural Association, where his interest in architecture and experimental forms began to take shape. In 1981, he and Caroline Thorman founded One Off in London. The studio provided a setting in which he could explore furniture and objects as sculptural forms, often working directly with industrial materials and unconventional manufacturing techniques. He subsequently established Ron Arad Associates in 1989, bringing his architectural and design activities together, and later created a production studio in Como, Italy. In 2008, Ron Arad Architects was launched alongside Ron Arad Associates, with the newer practice concentrating principally on architectural commissions. The present work was inspired by the controversy surrounding Michelangelo’s 'Taddei Tondo', in the collection of the Royal Academy. In 2020, the institution faced major backlash when there was a suggestion that the piece might be sold to save jobs during the pandemic, which they denied via a public statement. here, was, a, suggestion, that, the, piece, might, be, sold, Condition Report, Condition Report, Appears to be in good condition.
