A bronze royal head made in the tradition of the Benin Kingdom, Nigeria. The face shows the fine line patterns typical of Benin bronze casting, with a beaded crown and ornamental knot on top. The cylindrical base was designed to stand on a palace altar. When a king of Benin died, his successor would commission a head like this to honour him. These pieces were sacred objects central to Benin royal life for over 600 years. Today they are held in the world’s leading museums.
