Rupert de Deutz - Commentarium in Evangelium Ioannis, libri XIIII - 1545

RUPERT OF DEUTZ. — COMMENTS ON THE GOSPEL OF SAINT JOHN (PARIS, 1545). Paris: Oudin Petit (printed by Guillaume Thibout), 1545. Complete, 391 pages. Octavo. Brown mottled parchment spine with raised bands gilded. Precious and rare Paris edition of the 16th century by one of the most influential medieval exegists and mystical theologians, Rupert, abbot of the monastery of Deutz (located on the banks of the Rhine, opposite Cologne) and a fervent defender of the Order of Saint Benedict. His Thirteen Books of Commentaries on the Gospel of Saint John constitute a summit of medieval patristics and sacramental theology, reissued in the Renaissance by Parisian humanist booksellers to feed the theological debates of the time in response to the Reformation. Volume solidly bound in an elegant full calf binding (late 17th century). Wear from use and losses to the headpieces and corners, small superficial leather losses on the boards. Interior very clean and well preserved on sturdy laid paper, preserving the fine printer’s mark on the title page and provenance marks from the Grand Seminary of Bourges. Ink erasures on the title page. Very beautiful and elegant copy.
