Rutherford B. Hayes ALS

Autograph letter signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes, dated January 12, 1889, on personal stationery from Fremont, Ohio, accompanied by the original addressed mailing envelope. The letter is addressed to William Osborn Stoddard, one of Abraham Lincoln's private White House secretaries and the author of a contemporary biography of Hayes. Writing after leaving the presidency, Hayes dismisses rumors of a return to public office, stating, "There is absolutely nothing in what is said," and discusses meeting with Stoddard in New York to review documents and promote the forthcoming biography. An outstanding post-presidential letter linking two significant nineteenth-century American political figures and offering firsthand insight into the creation of Hayes' own biography.
