Sabine, Texas. City of Sabine. Certificate of Stock. 1839 $1000. PMG

Sabine, Texas. City of Sabine. Certificate of Stock. 1839 $1000. PMG Choice Fine 15. No 172. January 24, 1839. Star at top center with arced "CERTIFICATE OF STOCK" above and arched inwards. Cargo train at right opposite a sailing ship at left. Circled "Lone Stars" and Liberty Seated coin in left panel. Telegraph Press---Houston in the fringes of the left margin. The obligation states "This certificate entitles the holder to the Five Hundreth Part of the City of Sabine; the original proprietors being Sam Houston, Philip A. Sublette, John P. Roberts, Niles F. Smith, A.G. Kellogg, George W. Hockley, W.D. Lee and others; and by presenting the same to the Agent of the Company, shall draw a proportionable dividend of the proceeds of Sales; and will be received at par, in the purchase of Lots at One Thousand Dollars." Signed by Niles F. Smith as Agent for Proprietors. Signed on back with evident ink burn. These certificates were issued in denominations of $250, $500, and $1000 and this is the first we have sold and auction records show that two lower denominations have sold in recent years. Those examples were heavily torn and tape repaired, but still managed to command four-figure price realizations. This comparatively handsome example should easily fit the bill for one lucky specialist looking to build a truly comprehensive collection of Obsoletes from the Republic of Texas. PMG comments "Corner Missing, Ink Burn, & Stains." Estimate: $1,250 - $1,750. Click here for certification details from PMG.
