Saint Augustin & G. Gombès / Despierre - La cité de Dieu - 1976

Charming numbered edition 359 on pure-fiber Dame Blanche paper and illustrated with color lithographs by Despierre, with a study by Maurice Gandillac and the translation by G. Gombès - Written at the beginning of the 5th century, in a context deeply marked by the upheavals of the Roman Empire, the work responds in particular to the accusations leveled against Christianity after the sacking of Rome in 410 and seeks to demonstrate that the political misfortunes of an empire cannot be simply attributed to the abandonment of the old Roman gods - Saint Augustine, however, transforms this contingent response into a much broader reflection on human history, religion, politics, morality, philosophy, evil, freedom and the ultimate destiny of humanity - The fundamental opposition between the “City of God” and the “earthly city” structures the entire thought, but these two cities must not be understood as two strictly separate material cities: they designate above all two spiritual and moral orientations, two ways of loving and organizing existence - Saint Augustine & G. Gombès / Despierre - The City of God - 1976 - Vol. I and II - Philippe Lebaud - 331 + 325 Pages.
