Saint James at the Battle of Clavijo. Circle of Goya. Spanish School.

Descriptio Oil on octagonal copper. Dimensions: 39 x 32 cm (43 x 37 x 3 cm with frame). Scene of the miraculous apparition of Saint James at the Battle of Clavijo, depicted on a white horse carrying the banner of the cross. The dynamic composition and the treatment of light, which emphasizes the drama of the battle, evoke the religious and heroic paintings of Goya’s Madrid circle. A preparatory work for a ceiling, this piece combines expressive force and late Baroque energy reinterpreted in a Romantic key, reflecting the patriotic and spiritual fervor of 19th-century Spain. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
