Saint Jerome the Penitent, Spanish School, 17th Century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 147 x 110 cm (155 x 118 cm with frame). Depiction of Saint Jerome, semi-nude, in a penitent pose, flagellating himself with a stone and contemplating a crucifix. At his feet are books, a skull, and a lion, classic attributes of the saint. The dramatic chiaroscuro and the defined musculature reveal the tenebrist influence of 17th-century Spanish Baroque. The original frame retains the austere decorative elements of the period. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
