Saint Louis, Missouri. $5 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 477. State NB. Charter #5172. PCGS Currency Choice New 63. A pillar of the banking industry in Missouri during the early 1900s. The State National Bank of Saint Louis (Charter# 5172) received a national charter in 1899 and kept a considerable circulation in excess of $1 million from 1901 through 1929 when its assets were bought out and liquidated by the Mississippi Valley Trust Company of St. Louis. This particular specimen was issued less than a decade after 1899 as it features the stamped signatures of Cashier Major Logan Tompkins and President Lorraine F. Jones who had both fought on opposite sides of the American Civil War and served in their respective positions here from 1906 to 1907. Historical tidbits aside, this note is indeed a remarkable example of this popular type in both aesthetic and technical terms and offers much that could warrant a strong bid. Estimate: $1,250 - $1,750.
