Cerere e Fitalo is an engraving realised by Salvator Rosa (Arenella 1615 – Rome 1673) in 1662. This work, which represents a significant moment of mythology, is executed in etching and drypoint, signed on the plate at the bottom with the inscription ‘Salvator Rosa Inu.Scul.’. Sheet size: ca. 48×37 cm Print size: ca. 35×23 cm Support: Thick laid paper with watermark Condition: Excellent state of conservation The engraving was made between 1662 and 1663, but the print is presumed to be from the 18th century. This work is documented in several publications, including: G. BOZZOLATO, Le incisioni di Salvator Rosa, 1973 O. THEODOLI, Salvator Rosa 1615-1673, Acqueforti, Bergamo, 1992 Salamon S., Salvator Rosa. L’opera grafica. Catalogo ragionato, Torino, 1993 The engraving transposes into images a fragment of Greek mythology linked to the Eleusinian Mysteries. The scene depicts the meeting between the goddess of agriculture, Ceres (Demeter), and the Attic hero Phytalus. During her desperate search for her daughter Proserpina (kidnapped by Pluto), Ceres wandered the Earth taking human guise. Phytalus warmly welcomed her into his home, offering her shelter. As a sign of deep gratitude for the hospitality received, the goddess gave Phytalus the first sprig of a fig tree, a plant hitherto completely unknown to humankind. The work showcases Salvator Rosa’s unmistakable style, characterized by a wild and dramatic nature, gnarled branches, and a strong expressive charge in the poses of the figures. The Latin inscription at the bottom of the composition is presented in a cartouche with three lines of text that spell out the narration: “Hic Cererem tectis Phytalus susceperat heros, Cui primum sacri largita est semina pomi, Quod mortale genus FICVM vocat.” Translation: "Here the hero Phytalus had welcomed Ceres into his house, to whom she first granted the seeds of the sacred fruit that the mortal race calls FICUM (fig)."
