SAM SMITH OF DARTMOUTH (1908-1983) - 'EXECUTIVE' MODEL BOATS. Including a painted wooden boat 'Royal Charter', with three figures and rigging, marked to the base 'Sam Smith Unique (25cms long), also with two smaller model boats called 'Black Watch' and 'Arlecchino' (18cms and 13cms long). (3) *Sam Smith was an English artist, sculptor, and toy-maker known for creating intricate wooden toys and sculptures described as "sculpture toys for grown-ups." Active from the 1930s to the early 1980s, his work—often humorous yet satirical—drew on childhood memories and social commentary. Exhibited at the Royal Festival Hall, Serpentine Gallery, and in the US, his pieces are held by institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum and Southampton City Art Gallery. *Provenance, These belonged originally to Anthony and Arlie Panting late of Martock and then Langport. When they lived in London they knew Sam Smith in the 60s and 70s. After Anthony's death they went to one of his neices, and on her death they went to the present owner.
