Sampson Hancock & Sons - Pitcher - Hollyhock - Strong...

Antique English water jug for a wash basin (wash jug) typical of Victorian-era toilet sets. The decorative style is Flow Blue, a technique in which cobalt blue color subtly fades into the body of the ceramic during firing, creating a soft artistic effect. The piece was made by the English manufacturer Sampdon Hancock & Sons, at the historic Stock-on-Trent ceramic works in England. The model, Hollyhock, is a word stamped above the crown, which in English means hollyhock, referring to the large blue flowers that decorate the body of the jug. The material, Opaque China, a type of strong earthenware, originated in England in the 19th century to imitate Chinese porcelain. The simple inscription England, paired with this specific crown, places the piece’s production between 1891 and about 1905. The number 40 87/4 handwritten in gold denotes the decorator’s number or the glaze/lot number used by the manufacturer for internal quality control and for tracing the hand-applied gilding design. Dimensions: 31 cm high x 27 cm wide.
