San Diego, California. $10 1882 Date Back. Fr. 540. Merchants NB.

A Unique Survivor for the Type on San Diego San Diego, California. $10 1882 Date Back. Fr. 540. Merchants NB. Charter #4886. PCGS Currency Fine 15. Even though there are many great National Bank Note rarities from San Diego, this is the only one that can undisputedly claim to be unique for an entire type overall. Issued by the Merchants National Bank (Charter# 4886) around the early 1910s when the provisions of the Aldrich-Vreeland Act were still current, this example is the only confirmed Series of 1882 $10 Date Back recorded on any of San Diego's 10 banks by the National Bank Note Census. Even more remarkable is that types such as Series of 1882 Brown Backs and Series of 1902 Red Seals collectively account for 18 pieces with a sizable population of Brown Backs recorded on the same bank that issued this same note, but more Date Back $10-$10-$10-$20 format sheets were issued than Brown Back sheets of the same format. Such a disconnect though is rather interesting and does well to underscore often atrocious survival rates that frustrate collectors looking to represent specific types within their collections while for those who collect San Diego, this note is one whose existence was once alluded to by mere pixels making this perhaps a generational opportunity for the collector who seeks San Diego Nationals. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
