San Diego, California. $10 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 629. Merchants NB.

San Diego, California. $10 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 629. Merchants NB. Charter #4886. PCGS Currency Fine 15. Contemporary to the twilight of this institution that was acquired and liquidated by the San Francisco-based Bank of Italy in 1922, bidders have for their consideration a well-circulated $10 Plain Back on the Merchants National Bank of San Diego (Charter# 4886) that was issued shortly before liquidation. Emblazoned with a bank serial number that reads "10886," one is not only faced with the highest known serial number among the $10 Plain Backs recorded on this bank, but also the latest of the known survivors. Now held together with the fact that this bank issued approximately 7,017 $10-$10-$10-$20 format sheets of Plain Backs (No. 4601 - 11618) along with present signatures attributable to Cashier Charles H. Anthony and President Ralph Granger, it takes little to figure that this exact note was issued only months before liquidation. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
