Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, San Jeronimo. A hand-modeled pottery figure of a standing pregnant woman, both hands resting on the swell of her rounded belly. She is partly nude. She wears only a loincloth, with circular earspools, a beaded necklace, and coiled shoulder pads that frame a compact torso. Her large, pointed breasts have clearly marked nipples. The broad, flat face shows the deep-cut style typical of San Jeronimo work: arched brows, punched almond eyes, a ridged nose, and a parted mouth. Above it, a tall, striated coiffure rises in a crisp crest. The short legs carry incised detail and end in notched toes. Images of pregnancy and adornment like this were common in early West Mexican figurine traditions, and they were probably linked to fertility and lineage. Item # 205669
