Saraswati with Veena – four-armed Hindu goddess – brass –...

For sale is this exceptionally heavy and finely detailed brass figure of the Hindu goddess Saraswati from an inherited collection of Asian art and decorative objects. Saraswati is revered in Hinduism as the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, music, language, and the arts. She is particularly characterized by her depiction with the veena, a traditional Indian string instrument. This attribute makes the attribution of the figure to Saraswati very clear. The goddess is four-armed and shown seated on an elaborately designed, multi-tiered lotus pedestal. Two hands are devoted to playing the large veena, which runs diagonally across the body. In the other hands she holds additional symbolic attributes. Especially elaborate are the high headdress, the jewelry, necklaces, bracelets, and the finely structured garments. The back is also fully worked and shows numerous ornamental details. The large base is adorned all around with stylized lotus leaves and other floral ornaments. The surface of the brass displays a warm golden hue with dark patination, especially in the recesses, which clearly highlights the numerous details.
