Impressive and spectacular patinated bronze sculpture depicting a Roman warrior driving a war-chariot drawn by two spirited galloping horses. A piece of remarkable sculptural quality, part of the great tradition of historical and mythological bronzes inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity. The composition is strikingly dynamic and full of movement: the two horses are captured in full gallop, one rearing in effort, the other lunging forward in the impulse, their manes and tails streaming. The warrior, wearing an ornate cuirass and crowned with a Corinthian crest helmet, firmly holds the reins — actual metal chains finely worked — in a gesture of mastery and power. The chariot with spoked wheels and a richly decorated flank featuring antique motifs completes this epic scene. The whole rests on a naturalistic, rocky terrace with an expressive treatment, set on a wide rectangular black marble base. The execution is remarkable from every angle: hooves, harnesses, the musculature of the horses, details of the cuirass and helmet — each element is treated with care and precision. The warm brown-gold patina, with subtle shading in the recesses, gives the piece nobility and character.
