Sculpture, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Smarten - 59 cm - Basswood

Beautiful Gothic sculpture of Our Lady of Sorrows. Wholly hand-carved limewood, with polychromy and remnants of gilding. The stillness and devout pose of Mary, which simultaneously gives a very soft and vulnerable facial expression, lend the figure a lovely fragility and intensity. Belonging to a deep religious experience. Germany / Poland, early 16th century. Condition: usual wear to polychromy and gilding. Fingers and left foot with some wood loss. A few old nail holes where the statue was once fixed to a back panel. Shipped by registered mail.

Estimate:£1,005.1
