Polychrome wooden sculpture "Ecce Homo" - Central-southern Italy / Popular milieu - Late 18th / Early 19th century Description Round wooden sculpture depicting the sacred iconography of Ecce Homo (Christ at the pillar / Christ patient). The work is realized in a popular devotional style, characterized by an expressive and marked carving. The figure is carved from a single block of wood that also includes the square base. The arms were carved separately and grafted to the torso during construction through puttyed joints, according to the traditional construction technique of the period. The crown of thorns is carved directly from the head block. The body retains the original polychromy with simulated scourging wounds. The hands are shaped to hold an attribute; the wooden scepter currently present is a later addition not contemporaneous. Originally the hands probably held a cloth or hemp rope. The underside of the wooden base is clean, free of seals, marks, or residues of paper labels. Dimensions: • Height: 41 cm • Base: about 12 x 13 cm State of conservation: The object presents as visible in the photographs. It shows the normal signs of age and devotion. Noted: . • Minimal losses of paint film and wear of the polychromy widespread, particularly on the edges of the loincloth, on the fingers and along the edge of the base. • Patina from smoke and accumulated dust in the concave areas of the hairstyle carving and the crown. • Some elements of the thorns on the crown are worn or fragmentary.
