Flemish/Dutch School of the 18th Century - Peasants around the Fire (Pendant) - Oil on canvas laid on panel Complete Description • Era: 18th Century (1700s) • School: Flemish / Dutch • Technique: Oil on canvas applied to panel (antique marouflage) • Dimensions: 22 x 31 cm (painted area) | 47 x 56 cm (with contemporaneous frame) • Signature: Not signed • Condition: Generally good, with dense and uniform age craquelure across the surface. Aesthetically, a few old abrasions and superficial scratches reveal the underlying preparation: a faint horizontal linear trace in the background on the left (about 1–2 cm), a series of small diagonal scratches above the man seated near the fire, and a few small, pinpoint color losses scattered in the background around the youth on the right (see detailed photo). These are minor surface flaws that do not affect the stability of the support and could be easily addressed with a light cleaning and minor painting retouching (esthetic restoration). • Frame: Splendid contemporaneous 18th-century cassetta frame in carved wood with stylized vegetal motifs (acanthus leaves and grapevines) and gold leaf on red bole. Identical in style, carving, dimensions, and patina to that of the first lot. Description of the work: A refined cabinet painting that constitutes the pendant (twin picture) to the scene with the card players. The work depicts a group of five peasants and travelers gathered inside a ruin or rural inn, warming themselves around a vivid fire. The composition and the grotesque physiognomies of the figures — particularly the elderly man with a stick and a fur hat and the seated figure in the foreground shielding himself from the smoke — show a close stylistic derivation from the masters of 17th-century Flemish-Dutch genre painting, chiefly David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen Brouwer, and Adriaen van Ostade. On the right, in perfect compositional parallel with the first painting, is the figure of a boy with a red hat looking melancholically toward the viewer. The painter demonstrates notable technical skill in handling light: the chiaroscuro is heightened and the orange reflections of the fire dramatically illuminate the faces and garments of the figures, creating an intimate, warm atmosphere with strong dramatic impact. Traceability elements and reverse: The back of the panel shares the same collecting history as the first painting, presenting the same ancient mounting methods and the sequence of commercial/hereditary inventory numbers (orange soft pastel and sale tags) that certify their shared historical passage within important private collections.
