Complete Description • Era: 18th Century (Settecento) • School: Flemish / Dutch • Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board (antique marouflage) • Dimensions: 22 x 31 cm (paint only) | 47 x 56 cm (with contemporary frame) • Signature: Not signed • Condition: Excellent. The painting features a splendid and dense natural and geometric network of craquelure, uniform across the surface, consistent with the natural aging of the pictorial layer of over two centuries. The support is sound and stable. • Frame: Splendid 18th-century carved wooden cassetta frame with stylized vegetal motifs (acanthus leaves and tendrils) and gold leaf on red bole. It retains its natural and charming patina of time with minimal and negligible flaking of the gypsum preparatory layer on the outer edges. Description of the work: A refined cabinet painting depicting a classic genre scene of Northern European origin. The composition presents a group of villagers and wayfarers concentrated in a card game outdoors, near a rural ruin. The characterization of the figures — including the man with the pointed red hat and fur waistcoat, and the back-facing player with a flask at the belt — and the careful psychological rendering of their gazes directly recall the celebrated 17th-century models codified by masters such as David Teniers the Younger and Adriaen van Ostade, widely collected and reinterpreted throughout the 18th century. On the right, in the foreground, a boy watches the scene, while at the bottom right a still-life detail with a ceramic jug can be seen. The work stands out for its effective use of chiaroscuro and for the confident painting technique, with quick, paste-like touches of white light to define clothing and playing cards. Traceability elements and verso: On the back the support board bears important historical and connoisseur marks: two paper labels with inventory number 31306/7 (present on both the frame and the board) and the inventory number 9873 written in orange chalk, a typical mark from auction houses or hereditary historic inventories of the 19th/20th century. On the front of the frame is an octocentennial metal plaque bearing an old attribution to Albert Flamen (1564-1646); this attribution is to be regarded as erroneous (as Flamen is historically known primarily as a graphic engraver of natural subjects), but it represents a fascinating testament to the collecting history of the piece.
