Scuola veneta (XVIII) - Capriccio con Figure - NO RESERVE

Architectural Capriccio with Figures. Venetian School – second half of the 18th century. Oil on paper applied to cardboard. The refined painting presented here constitutes a happy testimony of the architectural caprice of landscape, a genre that, in 18th-century Veneto, finds one of its most poetic seasons. The composition presents a cultivated ideal view, where neoclassical-order symmetry dialogues with a lyrical sensibility. The visual core is occupied by an elegant circular temple—the monotero—that rises from a fountain, scenographically adjoined to a commemorative equestrian monument. The elegant monumental quality of the architecture is thoughtfully humanized by the insertion of figures, in period costumes: a patrician couple strolling, and a reflective character with the characteristic Venetian tricorne. In the background, the mountain chain evokes the Venetian Prealps, recalling the famous pleasure villas of the Serenissima. The work stands out for its use of oil on paper, a support historically favored by the Venetian masters, capable of fixing the luminous intuition with immediacy, imparting to the brushwork a vibrant freshness and a swift touch. The palette, played in warm ochre dashes, dusty greens, and pure blues, radiates a diffuse, atmospheric light. The viewer almost perceives the sun-warmed stone and the coolness emanating from the pools of water. The entire scene is permeated by a silent musicality: one seems to hear the soft murmur of the fountain and the rustle of garments on the gravel, immersed in an Arcadia-like atmosphere suspended, a mirror of an elegance refined in its twilight. The painting preserves its structural stability thanks to the mounting of the original paper on cardboard. The painted surface carries a noble, historicized patina that attests to its authenticity and age, preserving intact a delicate chromatic softness. The work comes from a private Emilian collection. It was restored in the last century. As a complement to the work, there is a 19th-century ebonized box-frame with guilloché work. Dimensions: 43 cm x 41 cm.
