Descriptio A drop-leaf secretary made with an oak frame, ebonized wood, and gilt bronze mounts, produced during the reign of Napoleon III (1852–1870), a period characterized by an intense historicist revival of earlier styles and an extraordinary development of the decorative arts. The piece exemplifies a type of drop-leaf desk established in the 18th century, which experienced a resurgence in the 19th century thanks to the eclectic taste of the Second Empire and the technical sophistication of Parisian workshops. The cabinet features an oak frame, a wood commonly used for its durability, covered externally with a high-gloss ebonized finish that imitates the appearance of ebony, a technique highly valued in the luxury decor of the period for its ability to enhance the contrast with the metal mounts. The deep black surface thus acts as a dramatic backdrop for a rich array of gilt bronze mounts, arranged in a symmetrical composition that underscores the cabinet’s architecture. The upper section is dominated by the characteristic folding panel that conceals the writing surface, framed by gilded moldings and adorned in its center with a classically inspired female mask surrounded by vegetal scrolls. This motif, with its mythological undertones, belongs to the ornamental tradition of 17th- and 18th-century French furniture, whose forms were freely reinterpreted during the Second Empire. The corners and frames are embellished with gilt bronze appliqués in the form of scrolls, acanthus leaves, and small cartouches, elements that reinforce the overall decorative effect and demonstrate the quality of the casting and chiseling. The large manufactories and workshops, frequently associated with the presentations at the 1855 and 1867 Universal Expositions in Paris, fostered the creation of richly ornamented furniture intended for both the aristocratic market and a rising bourgeoisie eager to assert its status through sumptuous interiors. Dimensions: 136 × 93 × 37 cm.
