SEGALEN (Victor). Homage to Gauguin. Rumeur des Âges, n.d. In-4, paperback with a flap cover illustrated after Paul Gauguin. An edition of Victor Segalen’s text dedicated to Paul Gauguin, accompanied by reproductions of the artist’s graphic works, notably woodcuts. Segalen, who arrived in the Marquesas Islands a few months after Gauguin’s death in 1903, was one of the first writers to recognize the significance of Gauguin’s work and to advocate for an interpretation of the artist free from the oversimplified legends that then surrounded his stay in Polynesia. An elegant publication printed on fine paper, particularly interesting for the convergence of two major figures connected to Polynesia and to the discourse on exoticism. Very good copy.
